Diego Rivera Navarro, the mayor of Tequila, Jalisco, has been arrested on suspicion of extorting distillers, Mexico’s federal safety minister has confirmed.


Yesterday (5 February), in a raid generally known as Operación Enjambre, or Operation Swarm, Navarro and three different high-ranking municipal officers – the director of public safety, the director of cadastre and property tax, and the director of public works – have been arrested following a number of citizen complaints.
All 4 are allegedly linked to the Jalisco New Technology Cartel, with expenses raised on alleged participation in acts of extortion, threats to entrepreneurs, and connections with prison constructions of drug trafficking within the area.
In accordance with Mexico’s federal safety minister, Omar García Harfuch, the arrest was carried out inside the framework of the nationwide technique in opposition to extortion and the combat in opposition to corruption instructed by the president of Mexico, Claudia Shein.
The information follows final 12 months’s grievance filed by Becle-owned Tequila firm Jose Cuervo, which accused Navarro of imposing extreme expenses on municipal taxes and licenses.
