(BOE Report)– Electrical energy imports from Canada into New York Unbiased System Operator (NYISO) and Unbiased System Operator New England (ISO-NE) have dropped attributable to drought situations in Canada and decrease U.S. Northeast electrical energy demand, the U.S. Power Data Administration (EIA) mentioned in a report on Friday.

The EIA famous that from January to August 2025, imports into New England’s ISO-NE averaged lower than 40% of 2022 ranges, whereas imports into New York’s NYISO fell to 25%.
Canadian hydropower output has been constrained by ongoing drought, whereas electrical energy demand in ISO-NE and NYISO declined 9% and 6%, respectively, between 2016 and 2024, the EIA report highlighted.
“Though NYISO and ISO-NE usually import electrical energy from Canada, the shifting tendencies have led to a number of days of web electrical energy exports into Canada from the 2 ISOs,” the EIA added.
In accordance with the EIA, web electrical energy exports from NYISO and the ISO-NE to Canada happen extra regularly in the course of the shoulder seasons – spring and fall – when electrical energy demand within the U.S. Northeast is comparatively low.
Through the summer season and winter months, increased regional demand limits the quantity of electrical energy out there for export, the EIA added.
