When translated from its native Portuguese, “fio a fio” means “thread by thread”, an homage to the nation’s textile and lace-making industries. It’s also a somewhat applicable technique to describe how I’m feeling concerning the upcoming adventures of Portugal’s mens nationwide soccer group within the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Pleasant expressions apart, this Portuguese white is a mix of Fernão Pires, Loureiro, and Albariño varietals from the Vinho Verde area, and makes its debut stateside this summer time. Excellent timing.
Extremely fragrant because it pours, the wine provides notes of white flower, lychee, and pineapple on the nostril, every taking turns because the dominant aroma within the glass. There’s loads of fruit on the palate, with ardour fruit and peach resulting in an expressive end that leans into the peach notes. A contact of minerality cuts by means of, stopping it from being overly fruit-forward. It’s well-balanced, agreeable from begin to end and value trying out. Particularly at such an inexpensive value level.
