Portland Normal Electrical (PGE) has introduced on-line three new utility-scale battery vitality storage methods (BESS), including 475 MW and over 1.9 GWh of dispatchable capability to the Portland metro space.
The installations, strategically situated in North Portland, Troutdale, and Hillsboro, signify a major growth of the utility’s capacity to steadiness renewable vitality variability, handle peak demand, and improve grid resilience.
Based on PGE, the mixed output of the three lithium-ion methods can energy roughly 300,000 houses for 4 hours throughout high-demand intervals or provide gaps brought on by excessive climate or outages.
Two of the brand new amenities, Seaside (200 MW) in North Portland and Sundial (200 MW) in Troutdale, had been developed by means of PGE’s 2021 All-Supply Request for Proposals and awarded to Eolian, L.P. Seaside was constructed beneath a fixed-cost Construct-Switch Settlement and entered industrial operation in July 2025, whereas Sundial—operated by NextEra Vitality Sources beneath a 20-year capability settlement—has been operational since December 2024. The third, Constable (75 MW) in Hillsboro, was constructed by Mortenson and have become operational in late 2024.
Aaron Zubaty, CEO of Eolian, highlighted the infrastructure advantages of siting storage at main substations, which maximizes using present high-voltage transmission traces and avoids pricey grid growth tasks.
The newest additions be a part of PGE’s 17 MW Espresso Creek Battery Storage system, accomplished in 2024, bringing the utility’s complete large-scale storage capability to 492 MW.
