ExxonMobil and Qatar Vitality have commenced exploratory drilling for pure gasoline in a prospect named Electra, positioned west of Cyprus, as introduced by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides on X.
The drilling operations started on Friday morning, a part of Cyprus’s efforts to ascertain itself as a dependable supply of pure gasoline for the EU.
“Cyprus progresses exploration actions, aiming to be another and dependable supply of pure gasoline for the EU,” President Christodoulides acknowledged.
ExxonMobil had beforehand indicated in late 2024 that it might begin drilling in January 2025, focusing on pure gasoline within the offshore area.
“We’ve spent the final two years gathering very detailed, three-dimensional seismic information … We’ve recognized a number of massive prospects, and the subsequent stage is to herald a drilling rig and to check these,” John Ardill, Vice-president for international exploration at ExxonMobil, instructed Reuters in November.
“There’s big potential for gasoline exploration,” Ardill stated, including that Exxon sees the Electra prospect as “extremely promising.”
